Where do I put items I'm returning?
I haven't been in the library in a while. I used to put materials in a slot in the circulation counter to return them, and lots of times I could just put books on top of the counter above the slot. Most of the time someone was standing there and checking books in. But now it seems that there aren't any books there and no one is checking things in. Where are we supposed to put the materials we are returning? I am mystified!

We changed the inside return location a while ago (you're not visiting us often enough, we miss you!). But we didn't change it drastically. As you come through the inside double doors, there is an opening on the north wall, the wall behind the circulation desk, just to the left of the cash register. There's a sign above the opening that says RETURNS HERE (duh, we're not very witty when it comes to signs). You can put anything you check out from us through that slot, with one exception. We prefer that you return interlibrary loan materials to someone working at the Circulation Desk. Because those materials are from other libraries, they require special handling and we don't want them mixed in with things that we own.
We did this to ensure that materials returned to us remained secure after they left your possesion. We also did this to improve accuracy. Checking things in isn't all that easy, and when people are firing questions at you and the phone is ringing, and someone wants help at the copier, well, what should be a smooth process sometimes goes a little off kilter. Doing check-ins in our work room makes it a little easier to concentrate and we hope to do a better job for you.
