Is there a way to keep track of new DVDs I want to watch...??

Dear Circ,

My wife and I both have commitments in the evenings, so we don't get to spend many evenings together. When we do get an evening together, we like to stay in, and just watch a DVD, kind of a date night at home. The problem is that when we do find a new DVD it's got a 3 day check out and usually we can't get it to mesh with our crazy schedule. We're happy to wait until the Quick Picks aren't brand new, and go to a 7 day check out. But by then we've forgotten the titles we were interested in, and we can't find the movies we wanted! Date night is suffering, can you help us??

Dear Dave,

This isn't such a hard problem. All you really have to do is make a list!

The first thing to do is go to our web site, we've done some of the searching for you. At the top, to the right of "Home", you'll see "Books & More" with an arrowhead.  If you place your mouse on "Books & More", you'll see a drop down menu.  Left click on the entry "Find Movies", it's the 4th entry from the top.  That will take you to our page on Movies.  On the right hand side of this page, you'll see a box with the header "New in Adult." If you left click on the category "Quick Pick DVDs", you'll go to our catalog, displaying a search showing all our current Adult Quick Picks.  Note that this search is sorted by "Newly Added", you'll see this category right under the search results.  Now go to the filters and click on "New Titles."  You'll see choices there related to when we got a title in.  If you're only interested in titles added this week, click on that.  If you want to see what we've gotten in during the last three months, click on that.  For three months, you'll get this search.   Notice that the category under search results has changed the sorting order, so go ahead and change it back to "Newly Added."  The search will now look like this.

Let's move on to making a list.  Go ahead and log in, click on the "Log In" button at the top right.  Once you're logged in, you can look at the titles and see if what you want is there.  Don't try to place a hold, you can't do that for Quick Picks.  But you can create a list.  Click on "Add To List".  You'll see a box showing your list names, if you have any, and the option "Create New List."  Go ahead a create a new list.  You can name it anything you want, like "Dave's DVDs" or "Want to watch", whatever you please. When you click on save, you'll have created a new list, and your DVD title will be on that list. Find as many titles as you like, and put them in your new list.

So ok, what's so great about this? Well, whenever you plan on coming to the library, all you have to do is check your list.  You can check the availability of  each title on your list, and see where it's located. If the title you want has come off the Quick Pick list, that will show under "Collection", and then if you want, you can place a hold, or just check the location, and get it yourself when you're here. It's a really easy way to keep track of DVDs without having to worry about the details of circulation, or categories. And if you just happen to be driving by and decide to drop in, your list is here waiting for you on our computers. You can check your list on the fly, and find things you want to watch. You can't beat this with a stick!

Dear Readers,
Are you wondering about the image above? No, this person is not "Dear Circ" and is not employed by the Roselle Public Library. Nor is he a patron of ours. The person above is not a famous author, or even a script writer, actually he's a famous film director. Place your mouse cursor on the photo for the name of the director. Left click the image for an enlargement. For more information about this director, go here. To see the original uncropped photo, complete with actors (James Stewart, Jean Arthur) and the cinematographer (Joseph Walker), go here.  For items to check out, try our catalog.
