Why should I read Dear Circ....??

Dear Circ,

I saw one of your posts in the library at the Circulation Desk. When I asked why I should read it, the person behind the desk said to learn about the library. Well, the fact of the matter is that I worked in a library for 42 years, and I doubt you have much to tell me about libraries. The person suggested I might just have fun reading it. Well, I just don't "do silly." So I thought I'd write and ask:

Why should I read Dear Circ...??

No New Tricks For Me

Dear Tricksy,

Well first of all, while we respect you for your library experience, no matter how long you worked in a library, that was then and this is now. Libraries change and grow, faster and faster it would seem, as fast as the speed of the electrons that make up our current catalog. Compare today's computer catalog to the card catalogs that were the main stay for library science 42 years ago, or 142 years ago, when card catalogs were just being invented. Compare today's downloadable books, music, movies to the stacks of 42 years ago, or yes, even thousands of years ago. Compare checking out a book (after that was allowed) to downloading whatever to your tablet, smartphone, reader, what have you. Nope, as society changes, as technology changes, so do libraries. And as our library changes, our methods of using the library also change. We hope Dear Circ... is a mirror, a reflection of what libraries were, a window, a view of what we are, and just a little bit of a crystal ball, a vision of what we can be.

As for fun, yes, we hope Dear Circ.... is fun, at least a little. Learning is hard work, but it ought to be satisfying and fun too, not just drudgery. And we want Dear Circ.... to be a picture of us, from our patrons, including our tiniest babies and our most "dignified" adults, to our staff, who bring a remarkable spectrum of talents, interests, ideas, knowledge, and personalities to "the desk." Because regardless of what the electrons are up to, we, all of us, are the essence of our library. (And sometimes, some of us like to have a little fun, and yes, are just a little silly...!)

Dear Readers,
Are you wondering about the image above? No, this person is not "Dear Circ" and is not employed by the Roselle Public Library. Nor is he a patron of ours. The person above is a famous author and possibly, a famous librarian. Place your mouse cursor on the photo for the name of the author. Left click the image for an enlargement. For more information, go here, here and here. For things to check out, try our catalog.

Do you have questions about the Roselle Public Library? Want advice about how to manage your account? How to find things? Want to know more about what we can offer you? Or worse, are you just lost in library jargon, and not even sure what to ask? Here's our forum for how to get the most from us, your local library. You can submit questions online to Dear Circ, or, as always, in person, or by phone (630-529-1641). Posted questions will be anonymous. Responses reflect the policies and programs of the Roselle Public Library, and may have no relevance to the policies, services, and procedures at any other library.
