What's a "suspended" hold and why would I want one...??

Dear Circ,

I like to travel and explore the small places, the back roads. I'm getting ready for summer, and I've got several jaunts planned, long week-ends. But I've got some books I'm waiting for, with several holds pending on my account. I really don't want to miss the books just because I'm out of town for a couple of days. How do I handle this?

Wandering Willie

Dear Will,

We understand just what you mean. We can't tell you how often we have someone returning from vacation and telling us "I got messages on my answering machine, is it too late to pick up the item, and if it is too late, do you know what the item was so I can find it on the shelf or put it back on hold?"

First things first, if we cancel a hold because you didn't pick it up, we have no record of what it was and we can't tell you the title of the item. The information has been lost.

The best way to take care of your pending holds while you're out of town is to suspend the holds. Suspending a hold is easy. All you have to do is log in to your account, then look at the account summary. You'll see a short list showing how many items you have on loan, and how many pending holds you have. To the right you'll see two categories, "View Loans" and "View Holds." If you left click on "View Holds", you'll see a list of your holds, item by item. Note that you can sort your holds, by author, by title, by status or by your position on the hold list, also known as "Queue." At the bottom of each item, you have two choices: "Cancel Hold" or "Suspend Until." "Cancel Hold" does just that, it removes the hold from your account. If you click on "Suspend Until" a calendar will appear and you have a choice of dates. You can choose the date when you're ready to accept items. Click on your chosen date, and the list of holds will reappear. The status of the item you suspended will now show as "Suspended Until:" with the date you picked. If you chose a date that is inconvenient or incorrect, you have the option to change it. If you click on "(change)" the calendar will reappear and you can enter a new date. You also have the option to "Reactivate." Reactivate will return the hold to active status. So if you're ready for items sooner than you expected, you can change the hold.

What's the advantage of a suspended hold? First of all, your position on the hold list doesn't really change. It allows people behind you to advance while your hold is suspended, but it doesn't put you at the bottom of the list. Another advantage is the information is not lost. Your record still contains the item you wanted. So it's a win all around.

We'll talk more about suspended holds in the future. In the meantime, just remember, you can do this by yourself, online, we can assist you in the library, and we can help you by phone (630-529-1641).
