What is Food for Fines...??

Dear Circ,

My neighbor was telling me about a program called "Food for Fines." She said I could donate food instead of paying late fees. I'm afraid I slipped up and returned some items late, so I've got a balance. My neighbor said the food goes to charity. It sounds like a good idea to me. I think feeding people who need some help is important! Can you tell me more?

Dear Karen,

We agree, helping people is important, it's what we're all about, and we try to do this in a variety of ways. One of our ways is a program called Food for Fines. Once a year, for a week, we accept non-perishable food items in lieu of late fines. We'll also accept cleaning products, like paper towels, dish soap, and so forth, and even personal items like tooth paste or hand soap. No glass containers, things that might leak, or fragile items please. Bring your donations to the Circulation Desk. In return, we'll take 50 cents per donated item off your balance of late fines. We don't accept donations for fees associated with lost or damaged items that require replacing. At the end of Food for Fines, we take all the donated items over to the Bloomingdale Township Food Pantry for distribution to local folks who need some help getting through a rough time.

This year Food for Fines is happening right now. We started accepting donations yesterday, June 5th, and will continue through Monday, June 12th. Show your kids that responsible behavior at the library can mean more than just paying a fine, it can mean feeding some other hungry kid. Turn your "Oh No!" moment into something positive, and help us give something back to our community.
