Saving a search in the Library catalog

such words as improvement, achievement,
and success have no meaning.

Hey, it's me Irving, remember? Can we keep going? I'm thinking that improving my library skills should be added to my list of goals for 2018!

Hi Irv,

Glad you're back. Where were we? Ok, we were searching on "debt" and experimenting with filters. So we'll go back to the catalog and try searching on "debt" again. Now, under the search box, you should see "Search Results for debt". Directly to the right of debt, you should see "(Save Search)" in blue. All you have to do is click on Save Search. If you haven't logged in, you'll get the log in box.  That's our computer asking who you are.  Fill in the Log In box, either with your library card number and your PIN, or if you've got an EZ Login set up, use that information.

Now that our computer has recognized you, a box will pop up that will say "debt" with a Save button next to the box. "debt" is what the computer thinks you will want to name your search, but you can name the search anything you want.  Name it "debt 1" and click on the Save button.   Now let's add a filter again, add "Adult Non-fiction" (under Collection), name it "debt 2", and save the search.  Now remove that filter and add "Finance, Personal" (under Subject), call it "debt 3" and save the search.  Now add the Adult Non-fiction filter again, call it "debt 4" and save the search.

So all that work, and what do you have?  Look at the top right corner, and you should see "IRVING'S Account."  Click on "IRVING'S Account" and a box will come up with your account information.  In this case, you'll see "Saved Searches" highlighted and all four of your "debt" searches will be listed in order by name. Each search will list the query you started with (what you typed in the search box) and the filters you added.  There is also a column for how the search is sorted and the date the search was performed.  Now if it's 2 a.m., you can go to bed and know you've made some headway.  The searches will be there tomorrow.  Alternatively, you can rename a search something more creative than a number, or you can delete it entirely if you don't think it's helpful.  For example, debt 1 was a search just on "debt" and had lots of extra things that weren't really what you were after.  So go ahead and delete it.

Ok, so besides going to bed, what can you do?  Well, you can click on any of the names of the saved searches and that will take you back to the list of items for that search.  You can examine each item, and read a  summary.  If you think the item is going to help you with your goal, you can place a hold, or put an item on a list for future reading.  We'll talk more about lists in the future.  You can take a search and re-sort it by publication year, for example if you want only the latest and greatest ideas, or you can sort by author, if you know some authors have ideas that you want to read about.   Or you can continue to refine your searches, as you please.  It's a snap! And the best part - any time we add a new book, DVD or other items that matches your search, the new item automatically shows up on your saved search!
